Shower grab bars Oceanside, CA

Professional Shower Grab Bar Installation in Oceanside, CA.

Grab bar installation in Oceanside, CA significantly reduces fall injuries. Unfortunately many people still think that grab bars are unnecessary, as their bathroom is fitted with strategically placed towel bars, which, for some, may be used as substitutes. The reality is that towel bars, or shower/tub features, aren’t built to support the weight of a person, but the weight of towels, and are therefore unfit for the job. Grab bars are designed specifically to benefit people with balance or mobility issues, and are the safest tool a person could install in a bathroom environment to prevent falls. Visit our Fall Safety Facts.

It’s a fact that although everyone could experience a fall, seniors are prone to falling much more than younger adults are. Luckily, most falls do not result in any injury, with the exception of minor bruises or scraped knees, but falls that occur in the bathroom, bring with them much more serious consequences.

Below are photos of shower grabs that were installed by Family Safe Homes in Oceanside, CA . Our client chose ADA approved stainless steel grab bars for their durability and aesthetic appeal.

Up to 80% of falls registered in the home, take place in the bathroom, DO NOT underestimate the potential risks of slipping on a wet surface, or falling while getting in and out of a tub or shower.

Winter hazards for seniors

Winter hazards for seniors
During the winter months, ice, snow and cold temperatures can make life challenging for everyone, especially for seniors.

Icy, snowy roads and sidewalks make it easy to slip and fall, so make sure to wear shoes with good traction and non-skid soles, and stay inside until the roads are clear. To help yourself feel more secure, replace your cane tip if its worn out, and take off your shoes as soon as you return indoors to avoid causing slippery conditions inside.

Remember that winter storms can lead to power outages so make sure you have easy access to flashlights and keep a supply of non-perishable foods that can be eaten cold on hand.

Also, ensure your safety by checking the batteries on your carbon monoxide detectors and buy a new one if needed. Carbon monoxide can’t be seen, smelled, or heard, and its symptoms (headache, upset stomach or dizziness) could easily be mistaken for those of a common flu, so making sure your alarm works is fundamental in keeping safe, especially in winter, when fireplaces, gas heaters or lanterns are being used.

To learn more about Carbon Monoxide detectors, and for a in-home evaluation to asses other potential hazards, please contact Senior Safe Homes.

Holiday safety tips for seniors

Holiday safety tips
Christmas time is a time to celebrate with your family, friends and loved ones, but if you have an aging senior in the family, it is also a time to pay particular attention to the changes you make to your home.

Christmas trees and decorations involve combustible materials, and they should therefore be avoided as much as possible. If so can’t be done, then try your best to keep these materials away from bare electrical wires, fireplaces, or candles so that they do not become ignited easily.

To be on the safest side, install a smoke detector in each room of your home, or of your senior’s home, and make sure to have at least one fire extinguisher to combat small house fires.

Also, when decorating your home with Christmas lighting, make sure extension cords do not become tripping hazards. Do not string cords across your floor or hide them under rugs, as this may cause elderly people who shuffle their feet, or who use walkers or canes, to easily fall. Use the same consideration when decorating outdoors. Extension cords for outside lights and yard displays should in fact also be tucked safely away near the base of your home, in order to keep walkways clear at all times.

Contact Senior Safe Homes for a in-home evaluation to asses potential hazards and make recommendations to keep your family’s holiday season safe and fun.

Furniture straps and senior hazards

Furniture straps and senior hazards
The phrase “accidents just happen” is no excuse to be unprepared and to not make simple changes that could greatly improve a senior’s safety in his home.

The most common hazards that can be found in a senior’s home are in the kitchen and in the bathroom, but the rest of the house needs inspecting too.

Start by installing brighter lighting to make sure everything is always in clear sight. Then make sure you remove, or tack down, all scatter rugs, as well as making sure electrical or telephone cords aren’t in traffic areas of the house where they can be easily missed and tripped over. Same thing goes for other items such as, for example, shoes.

Keep objects that you use the most in drawers or cabinets that are the easiest to reach, so you don’t need to stretch too much to get everyday items. Rethinking the arrangement of your storage shelves may seem like a difficult task if you are used to using a lot of things and everything seems important. In this case consider the idea of having furniture straps installed on both tall and heavy furniture, or on whatever other furniture you consider at risk. Furniture straps avoid tipping hazards, which can easily occur when your are trying to reach something in a high position: you loose your balance and either the object you were reaching for falls on top of you, or, while falling, you instinctively hold on to the furniture, bringing it down with you.

Furniture straps can greatly minimize the risk of tipping hazards, and make you feel more secure about walking around your home.

With the right guidance and adjustments, common household accidents ARE PREVENTABLE and [...]
